Philip Edward Smith (1884-1970), American endocrinologist. Smith is best known for his work on the pituitary gland. He first studied the gland in reptiles, before becoming the first to remove the pituitary gland in mammals, using a pipette that he made himself to suck out a rat's pituitary gland. He showed that removal of the pituitary gland caused disrupted growth, and atrophy of other endocrine glands and the reproductive organs.
