Particle therapy treatment room. Engineer installing a particle therapy machine. Particle, or heavy ion, therapy is a form of radiotherapy that uses beams of high energy protons, neutrons, or positive ions to target cancerous tumours. The particles damage the DNA of the cancer cells, ultimately causing their death. The engineer is holding the helmet worn by the patient during treatment to immobilise and protect the head. Photographed at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt, Germany.
