It isa fact, however, that when families with children desire to THE SCHOOLS OF THE PEOPLE 53 move from one community to another, they are often veryparticular to inquire about the school facihties. They realizehow desirable it is that their children should have the oppor-tunity of attending an up-to-date school; and they are un-willing to make their home in any place where this opportunityis denied to them. In recent years a movement has been going on in many com-munities to use the schoolhouses not only for the teaching of•children but also for other community or neighborhood pur-. Since the schoolhouse belongs to the community,there is really no reason why the grown people of the com-munity should not use it (outside of school hours) for clubmeetings, lectures, and other community gatherings or enter-tainments. In some communities the schoolhouse has become-a center in which various community activities are carried on; 54 GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS IN VIRGINIA and this is as it should be. In a few cities in the country theexperiment has been tried with success of using the school-houses for polling places on election days—that is, places atwhich the voters of the community may go to cast their votesfor candidates who are seeking to become officers of the gov-ernment. It is probable that in the course of time manyschoolhouses will be constructed with a view to their beingused for numerous community purposes in addition to teach-ing. LIBRARIES.
