When,as was customary until lately, the centre of the eccentric lies in aradius perpendicular to the direction of the crank, the movements ofthe steam piston and valve are different to each other—that is to say,when the crank passes from the left horizontal to the right hori-zontal position, the piston makes a corresponding rectilinear move-ment ; the eccentric, however, passes from the lower extremity ofthe vertical line, drawn through the centre of the first motionshaft, to the upper extremity, or vice versa, and consequently givesthe valve a rectilinear movement quite different to that of the pis-ton, in such a manner that, when the latter is at the middle of itsstroke, the valve, on the other hand, is at the end, and the steam- Practical Draughtsman.
