Ema Wooden Prayer Plaques and O-mikuji Paper Fortunes at the Hozenji Temple in Osaka, Japan

Ema are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. The Ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) are believed to receive them. O-mikuji are random fortunes written on strips of paper at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. Literally meaning "sacred lot", these are usually given by making a small offering.
