The turning aside of the fire at the AppraisersBuilding (at the northwest corner of Sansome andWashington) and at the Montgomery Block (at thesoutheast corner of Montgomery and Washington)saved a block of old structures between Washingtonand Jackson streets from the first days fire; byfurther hard work with a little water in barrels itwas saved from the fire that swept back from thewest on the third day. On the north side of Jacksonstreet, facing this saved block, one building standsalone in a block otherwise destroyed. This struc-ture, the Volkmann Building, had eighteen-footalleys on two sides, and a low brick building on.
