In other classes of machines the goodsare in contact with the heated roll only when the smallroll is in contact with them, and then the heated surfaceis only at the point of contact. In the steam machines, however, the whole of the heated surface is in contactwdth the whole of the surface of the goods, thereby mak-ing it possible to iron the work at a low temperature. The ironing of standup collars is a comparativelyeasy matter, as they are not folded, but simply curled, which is done by running them through a machineknown as the Collar Shaper. But the ironing of — 189 — FILLING CUP, W REGULATOR GUAZE STRAINER. Fig. 59. ECLIPSE SEAM DAMPENER.(Barnes-Erb Co.) turndown collars is quite difficult, as tliey liave to beturned and shaped after thej have been ironed on thecollar ironer. It is necessary to dampen the line wherethe collar turns to prevent the cracking of the goods, and in order to do this neatly the use of a dampeningdevice is necessary to dampen evenly that portion ofthe collar where it turns over, and not spread the linetoo wide, as this would cause the collar to be soft aroundthe edge of the fold. This dampening device is generally called the seamdampener, and it usually consists of some sort of aroll arrangement having felt, or fibre, edges to which — 190 — the water is applied, and as this roll passes over the goodsit causes a streak of water to remain where the rollhas passed. There are various makes of seam-dampen-ers, some of which are automatic, and feed the watercontinuously wh
