He was proclaimed Emperor of the French, under the title of Napoleon I., on the 20th of May, 1804, and was crowned with extraordinary ceremonies on the 19th of November. The Pope was compelled by the mandate of Buonaparte to repair to Paris, and perform the ceremony of the coronation. On the 19th of November, the Emperor, attended by a numerous military escort, and followed by an immense train of equipages, proceeded to the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
