Johann Ritter (1776-1810). Caricature of the German physicist, chemist and philosopher Johann Wilhelm Ritter. Ritter is best known for his discovery of the process of electroplating. He studied galvanic phenomena, the contraction of a muscle when stimulated by an electric current, and interpreted it as being due to the electricity generated by chemical reactions in the body. He also independently discovered that water could be decomposed by electricity. Ritter was a member of the Romantic movement and was strongly influenced by Friedrich Schelling.
