PCMCIA cards, or Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, are now legacy technology from the laptop word of computing, replaced by USB initially. They added interfaces or memory or other services to a laptop, or less common a PC or network equipment. Firewire interfaces were commonly used for items like Scanners.
