BRITISH COLUMBIA NEW CALEDONIA VANCOUVER ISLAND. San Juan arch. WELLER, 1862 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Drawn & Engraved by Edwd. Weller. Provenance: "Cassell's Complete Atlas", Published by Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London. Type: Antique map with original outline colour. The San Juan islands are shown on the map as British, although at the time of publication they were disputed territory. The US claimed Haro Strait as the international border, while Britain claimed the Rosario Strait, with both sides laying claim to the San Juan Islands. The dispute led to the Pig War in 1859 and a protracted diplomatic confrontation which continued until the boundary issue was eventually arbitrated by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany in 1871. The border, through Haro Strait, was established in favour of the US in 1872.
