John Glenn (left) and Gunter Went (right). Glenn (1921-2016) was the pilot of the Mercury 6 mission that launched on 20 February 1962 and was the first American mission to put a human in Earth orbit. He went on to become the United States Senator from Ohio, a position he held from 1974 to 1999. Went (1923-2010) was the German-American aeronautical engineer who was in charge of the spacecraft close-out crews at the launch pads for the entire Mercury and Gemini programs (1961â1966), and the manned phase of the Apollo program (1968â1975) at the Kennedy Space Center. His official title was Pad Leader.
