Lévignacq, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: fresco depicting mother and baby (left) and man harvesting crops with sickle. Painted in the late 1400s on the choir vault and triumphal arch of the medieval Eglise Saint-Martin (Church of St Martin). This and accompanying frescoes have survived mutilation and being covered over with whitewash in 1791. They were rediscovered in 1845 and restored as far as possible in 1984. A Last Judgement and a scene depicting the reception of souls into paradise are complemented by episodes from the Childhood and Passion of Christ, painted in six registers separated by bands bearing explanatory titles in Gothic lettering. The Childhood scenes include the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi and Flight into Egypt. Scenes of the Passion include Christ’s Agony at Gethsemane, the Kiss of Judas, the Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Crucifixion, Entombment and the Resurrection. The triumphal arch is decorated with geometric patterns and a scene of the archangel greeting the Virgin and Child. The church, in the Pays de Born countryside of the Landes des Gascogne, close to the French Atlantic coast, is filled with many other artworks such as monumental rustic Baroque biblical scenes painted on the nave ceiling vault between 1713 and 1715, as well as lengthy friezes of male and female saints.
