Heat-loving archaea. Coloured freeze fracture transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the archaea Desulfurococcus mobilis. This is a hyperthermophilic (very high temperature loving) species. The round cell is seen cut through, showing the cell wall and cell contents. Extremophiles live in extreme conditions such as extreme temperature, pH, pressure and salt environments. This species lives in high-sulphur volcanic habitats. It survives at temperatures up to 90 degrees Celsius, and thrives optimally at 85 degrees Celsius. Magnification: x16,700 at 5x7cm size.
