Sheriffof San Francisco County andformer Supervisor, was born in Ger-many April 10, 1858, and receivedhis education in the public schoolsof that country. He came alone tothis country when a boy of fifteenand followed the grocery businessin New York for three years, Vv^hen,in 1876, he came to San Francisco,which has ever since been his continued in the same businessfor another three years, when heentered the coffee and tea trade withthe old established firm of Leege &Haskins. remaining therein contin-uousiv until 1912, when he becameSheriff. Meanwhile he had been active inpublic affairs and had served twoterms as a member of the Board of Supervisors from 1901 to served on important committees, being a member of the PoliceCommittee and Chairman of the Electricity Committee.
