August Karl von Goeben (1816 – 1880), a Prussian infantry general, won the Iron Cross for his service in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. It was his leadership that contributed mainly to the victory at the Spicheren on 6 August, and von Goeben won the only laurels gained on the Prussian right wing at Gravelotte on 18 August.
