The LouisianaPurchase opened a great field for western emigration, andJefferson, realizing the importance of some knowledge of thenew territory, sent an expedition, under the leadership ofMeriwether Lewis and William Clark, brother of George Rogers #!^:iidiPsyfe?5. ROUTE OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION Clark, to secure the trade of the Indians on the Missouri, thenabsorbed by English companies, and to explore the country tothe western ocean.
