View over Lincoln towards the Cathedral

The west front of the cathedral dates back to 1072, the first of three cathedrals to have been built on this site. It was destroyed by fire in 1141. The second was shattered by an earthquake on Palm Sunday in 1185. The main body of the current cathedral was constructed during the 13th century. It has one of the most prominent positions of any English cathedral looking from its high vatage point over the city of Lincoln and beyond. Its dominating features are the three towers, two over the west front and a single tower in the centre.
