Iran/Persia/USA: 'Earth Could Not Answer'. Oil on canvas painting by Adelaide Hanscom Leeson (25 November 1875 - 19 November 1931), c. 1905-1912. Omar Khayyám (18 May 1048 - 4 December 1131) was a Persian polymath, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer and poet. He also wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, mineralogy, music, climatology and theology. Born in Nishapur of the Seljuk Empire, at a young age he moved to Samarkand and obtained his education there, afterwards he moved to Bukhara and became established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period.
