Hard gas-permeable contact lens. Close-up of an adult inserting a hard gas-permeable contact lens. Contact lenses are worn against the eye separated by a film of fluid. The lens is a thin, shell- like, transparent disc which fits over the cornea. It is used to correct defective vision such as short sight. There are 2 other types of contact lenses: hard & soft. Hard gas-permeable lenses (such as this one) have the same visual qualities as hard lenses, but are more comfortable as oxygen is allowed through the lens to the eye.
