Proliferating cell nuclear antigen molecule. Molecular model of human proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), complexed with an end section of the cell-cycle checkpoint protein p21. PCNA is a cofactor for DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) polymerase delta, an enzyme that synthesises the new strand during DNA replication and repair. PCNA helps to hold DNA polymerase delta to the DNA strand. p21 is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, that halts replication by binding to PCNA.
