Thor is shown with the giant Thrym, who had stolen his hammer and would return it after he was given goddess Freyja as a bride.
In Norse mythology, Thor was the god of thunder, and thus the god of might and war. The son of Odin, he had a magical hammer named Mjollnir that returned to him, a belt of strength, and iron gloves. In this 1905 illustration, Thor is shown with the giant Thrym, who had stolen the hammer and would only return it after he was given the beautiful goddess Freyja as his bride. Thor disguises himself as Freyja, goes through with the ruse, but once the hammer is brought out, he snatches it, whips off his bridal clothes (pictured here), and attacks Thor and the other giants, killing them.
