He wasconsecrated Bishop of theDiocese July 25th, 1901,and chosen by Pope Pius XAssistant at the Pontifical Throne May 23rd, 1910. The Diocese of Newark has advanced, during Bishop OConnorsadministration, along three definite lines—parish organization, parochialschool development and institutional work. The number of churches withresident pastors has increased from 114 in 1901. to 197 in 1917. Duringthe same period 45 Mission-churches and Chapels have been erected. Thenumber of priests engaged in the work of the diocese has almost doubled—the present clergy-list contains the names of 474 priests; in 1901 the. 382 QRourke number of iiriests was 265. The future needs of the diocese have beenprovided for by an increase in tlie number of candi(hites for the priest-hood. Tlie plan for an improved parocliial school system has been carefullyworked out during the present administration. The Bishop reorsanizedthe Diocesan School Board, appointed a Superintendent of parish schoolsand prescribed a uniform course of study. Thirty-four new schools, mak-uig m all 131. with an enrollment of pupils, an increase of morethan shows the school progress in the last decade and a education has been provided for by the erection of one new collegefor young women, St. Elizabeths at Conveut Station. The needs of the orphan, the sick, poor and the aged have been metby increasing the number of the diocesan institution
