Place Castellane,allegoric sculpture by Allar bros


This particular monument is some kind of a light house in Marseille,located in the 6th district of the town,it was unveiled by Mr. Fallières,President of the French Republic on November 12th 1911. The sculptor was André-Joseph ALLAR ( 1845-1926 Grand Prix de Rome in 1869) commissioned by Jules CANTINI a rich contractor of Italian extraction,who makes good in marble,to raise an allegorical monument to replace the former obelisk (to be found now Boulevard Rabateau,on the way to Cassis) At the summit of the column,the figure represents the city of Marseille symbolized by a women holding the armories of the town. At the lower part,four allegoric groups represent respectively ;`Source,Torrent,The Rhone and the sea,standing just in the middle,you can see Amphitrite (The Greek goddess of the sea,wife of Poseidon
