The bracket can therefore be moved in any direction, enablingthe mote knives to be set at any desired angle. Experience has shownthat a good setting for them is at a distance of about fifteen-thousandthsof an inch from the licker-in. Here, too, the same factors mentioned inconnection with the feed plate have much influence; the cleanhness of thecotton in use, however, is as important an one as any. The licker-in screen is adjustable to the licker-in independently ofthe movement of the cylinder screen. The bolts c ^^ r-^ in Fig. 34, are. Fig. 46. fitted in slots. By loosening them, the licker-in screen can be swungaround, and set at any desired distance from the licker-in. A distance of an inch will generally give good results. In Figs. 32 and 34 may be seen at P a plate known as the back knife plate. Its function is to prevent air drafts and to preventthe fibres from standing far away from the cylinder surface. The loweredge is sharp, like a knife, and reaches almost to the point where thecylinder strips the licker-in. It is made adjustable and is usually set ata distance of about .017 of an inch from the surface of the cylinder. B is bolted to the portion d^ of the licker-in boxcasting at I)- ^^. By loosening ^ /^, B may be swung around onB^^ as a movable fulcrum, and set at t
