Newcomen steam engine, 18th century. Illustration of the atmospheric engine invented in 1712 by English engineer Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729). It was the first to have a 'walking beam' pivoted arm (top) to transfer power between the piston and the rod. It was used to pump water out of coal mines. This was the first true steam engine, widely used in many industries over the next 75 years. This artwork is after 'Physique de Desaguliers'. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
