The ABC Cinema, Uxbridge Road, Ealing, London in 1968. The movie on was ‘The Odd Couple’, starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. A woman is crossing a ‘Zebra’ pedestrian crossing. The 1934 cinema was originally The Forum Theatre. It was taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC). Designed by Stanley Beard with an art deco facade dominated by eight ‘Egyptian-style’ columns. It was renamed ABC in 1961. An uncompleted project to become Ealing Filmworks meant demolishing most of the building, but the façade was restored in 2020 – a vintage 1960s photograph.

A view of the ABC cinema, Uxbridge Road/New Broadway, Ealing, London in 1968. The movie showing was ‘The Odd Couple’, an American comedy starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. A woman is crossing a ‘Zebra’ pedestrian crossing in the foreground. The cinema was originally The Forum Theatre, built for Herbert Yapp in 1934. It was taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC) within a year of opening. Designed by J Stanley Beard & Clare with an art deco facade dominated by eight tall ‘Egyptian-style’ columns. The theatre seated 2,175 on two levels. The interior had an Italian Renaissance style design. It was renamed ABC in 1961, and has undergone many name changes since then (Cannon, MGM, Virgin, ABC, UGC, and Cineworld, Empire). A project to become Ealing Filmworks included demolishing most of the building but the façade was restored in 2020 – the remaining development behind it (mainly residential) was still awaiting completion in 2023. This image is from an old amateur 35mm Kodak colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
