Lying on the breast, parallel with the left arm, which was close against the side, the hand resting in the lap, were a number of reeds; these lay flat and close together and had perhaps once been fastened together, though all traces of binding had disappeared. They may be seen in plate 29, 5. About the neck was a double string of olivella shell beads supporting a flat white stone pendant with a band of natural red coloring through its center (see pi. TO,r). The hair. / FOOT Fig. 30.—Cross section of Cist 16. on the back of the head was about 8 inches long and showed no dress- ing; that on the crown and about the forehead seemed to have been cropped close. At the side of the bod}^ and partly under the right arm were fragments of a cradle made of small reeds crossed on each other, interwoven with hair string, and fastened to a Avooden hoop. On and about the' cradle were scattered bones of a baby and ends of fur-string. On removing wdiat remained of the large " mummy," a trophy made from the skin of a human head (see pi. 87,«, 5) was found below it under the left shoulder. This specimen lay face upward and showed faint traces of a woven fabric that had been between it and the corpse; fastened to it were remnants of two strings, the ends of which extended in the direction of the " mummy's " neck.
