Arkansas is renowned for its quartz crystals, such as the whitish translucent-to-transparent silicon-dioxide specimens at the bottom of this close-up photograph. They are found in the Ouachita Mountains around the hamlet of Mount Ida. Visitors can prospect for these gemstones at dig-your-own crystal mines, or collect them at the many gem and rock shops in the region. Those shops sometimes attract customers with colorful bluish-green slag glass, an inexpensive byproduct from steel-making foundries that is shown at the top of this photograph.
