'States General of Paris, 1328', mid 19th century. The States General assembled in Paris cathedral, 1328, with Philip of Valois (1293-1350) presiding. He assumed the regency on the death of Charles IV until Charles' pregnant widow gave birth to daughter who could not inherit under Salic law. As Philip VI he became the first Valois king of France.
