Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman on a walkabout prior to demonstrations in Whitechapel London.


On Saturday 3rd September 2011 the English defence league proposed to march into Whitechapel in the East of London. The Home Secretary Theresa May banned all marches within five boroughs and additionally the City of London at the request of police. O the day an estimated 1000, EDL supporters made their way to London and were eventually escorted to a holding area in Aldgate where a static demo was allowed to take place. A counter demonstration held by the UAF (UNITE AGAINST FASCISTS) saw approximately 1500 attend a static demonstration in EDL protesters clashed with police in minor skirmishes throughout the day and were eventually sent out of the area early evening. There were 60 confirmed arrest of EDL supporters by police.
