Seed structure. Artwork showing the anatomical structure of a seed (grain) from a barley plant. The seed consists of the embryo (red, upper left) and the endosperm (rest of the seed), which is the food supply for the embryo (from which a new plant forms). The endosperm contains starch (white grains), amylase (yellow) and aleurone cells (green). The aleurone is a protein layer that is triggered by hormomes from the embryo to release amylase to break down the starch during seed germination. The embryo is labelled a diploid (2n) and the endosperm as triploid (3n) as found in double fertilization in angiosperms (flowering plants).
