Tower and Campanile at Aix-en-Provence - this clocktower was once the gate of the military outpost of Sextius and then the Bourg Saint Sauveur. It was constructed in 1510 and decorated with flamboyant pinnacles and ogres, and was the symbol for Aix-en-Province starting in the 14th century. Its "ban" bell emclosed in a 16th-century wrought iron cage, which was used to call the people to arms or to meet within a one-league perimeter of the city. Today it only strikes the hours. The clock is flanked by statues and an astronomical clock above the wooden figures of the four seasons. An inscription commemorates the liberation of Aix in August 1944
