HOW TO GROW SWEET PEAS.—The principal essential for the best success is a cool, deep, moist soil, and a sunny sit- uation The ground should be prepared deep and rich. Fall preparation, where possible, is preferable, but if done in the spring, use no <reen manure. Bone meal is good if old rotted manure can not be obtained. Sow early, as Sweet Peas need the cold, moist sprint around to make the root growth. In the latitude of Chicago, early in March is not too early. Sow the seed in deen furrows the bottom of which must be at least 6 inches below the level of the soil; this is to guard against a summer drought Cover the seeds only one inch, after which the furrow is still five inches deep. When the plants are 2 inches high, thin out to 3 or 4 inches apart and fill in another inch or so of soil around the plants, always leaving a portion of the plant above the surface; do this at intervals until the furrow is nearly full: it should always remain a little hollow to hold the rains, and to allow water to be applied in quantity when necessary. Durin- drv weather thev should be watered thoroughly and frequently and given an application of liquid manure once a week i. timlch of hav or rakings from the lawn will be found beneficial during hot weather. The flowers should be picked as often as possible, and all withered blooms should be removed, to prevent the plants from running to seed, which would stop them from continuing in bloom. 3937— Henrietta.
