The Kjölur route is one of the traditional routes, connecting in this case Reykjavik and Akureyri, that pass through Iceland´s barren and uninhabited Highland interior. For much of the route there is very little vegetation. Kjölur itself is a high plateau between the Hofsjökull and Langjökull glaciers, the latter of which is visible on the horizon.
