HARE Washington, Feb. 12—Today theycame from nearly all the States ofthe Union to stand in the LincolnMemorial. All day they filed by hispedestal gazing at the heroic figureof marble. They stood in small groups,reading in whispers the sonorouswords of the plaques on the wall. They were still reading at twilight,squinting to make out the words ofthe Gettysburg Address, many repeat-ing from memory when they couldnot see any more. Follows Lincoln But none saw what 1 saw. Only Isaw Mr. Lincoln, his garment turnedblack and worn, rise to his greatgaunt height and step from the pedes-tal. He did not seem to see the peopletrying to make out the carved wordsin the gloom, but walked straightahead, lost in thought. I followed Mr. Lincoln.
