The Na-tional Apple Show was again held in Spokane inNovember, 1909. I again contended for the firstprize, Southern States Special, with superiorapples to my entry in 1908. They were awardedthe first prize of $100 above all competitors. Thechairman of the committee making the award isthe most renowned pomologist in our county—Mr. H. E. Van Deman, of Washington, D. obtained also a diploma for the best new varietyof apples. The cancelled check of one hundred dollars forthis prize was applied for by a trustee of school, near Rabun Gap, and is nowframed and hung upon the schoolhouse wall, to. -if. a. *°*», *« o^. v;;v / AWARDED TO JOHN P. FORT FOR APPLES GROWN INRABUN COUNTY, GA., FORTS PRIZE APPLE. 5obn iporter ifort 71 remind the children that their county can producethe best apples. This apple, having been pronounced a new-variety and worthy of being put upon the pomo-logical books at Washington, was listed and giventhe name of Forts Prize. The apple has demon-strated those qualities that make a financial suc-cess, such as appearance, color, taste, and aboveall, keeping without decay until the spring. Anticipating that an orchard of this new varietyof apple wall be valuable, I have obtained graftsfrom the old trees and have put out an orchard ofthem. I have a confident hope and belief that thisvariety of apples will become very valuable infuture to apple growers, and that they will becomemoney-makers, such as the Baldwin and BenDavis are among apples; the Elberta peach, amongpeaches; the Concord grape, amon
