Ruthven Barracks outside Kingussie in the Scottish highlands

Ruthven Barracks was built by the British Governement as a stronghold in 1719 following the first Jacobite uprising in 1715. It was built on a former castle site which dated from 1229 and the barracks were completed in 1721. 200 Jacobites tried to capture the barracks in 1745 but they were unsuccessful. In early 1746 the Jacobites were better equipped and tried again and this time were successful. On the day after the Battle of Culloden, 3000 Jacobite troops re-assembled here willing to fight on. On receiving the news from Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) that every man should save himself as best he could, they set fire to the barracks on 17th April 1746 and dispersed. Today's it is in pretty much the same condition as it was left in 1746.
