This picture is doubtless one of the seven given by JohnVernon in 1616 and then described as a man with a curledhead (see the extract from the Court Records given in theaccount of Vernons portrait, No. 31). In the inventory of 1618it is included as one of the Fower small pictures of Dutchfashion, men and women, while in the inventory of 1693 itappears as the 6 Head of an Emperor. At what period it wasfirst attributed to Van Veen is not known. 16. 7. THE RIGHT HON. WILLIAM PITT B. 1759. D. 1806. John Hoppner, b. 1758, d. 1810. Three-quarter length, life-size, standing fronting, head to hisright; green velvet suit, white stock; right hand on chair, onwhich is a gold-embroidered robe, left hand resting on hip, apillar on his right, yellow curtain on his left. Canvas, 57 inches high x 44 inches. Presented to the Company in 1843. At a Court held on June 16, 1843, it was announced to theCourt that a portrait of the late Right Hon. William Pitt,painted by Hoppner, had been presented to the Company byNewell Connop,1 Jun., Esq., whereupon it was resolved that 1 Newell Connop was the last Treasurer of the Pitt Club, a club which wasinstituted shortly after Pitts death and dissolved in 1842.
