Pilgrims at Croagh Patrick, County Mayo, Ireland


On the last Sunday in July thousands of pilgrims ascend the mountain of Croagh Patrick, many climb barefoot, it is also known as Reek Sunday. The tradition of the pilgrimage to this holy mountain stretches back over 5,000 years from the Stone Age to the present day. It was reputedly on the summit of Croagh Patirck where Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD.
