The edges of the ethmoidal fissure are hoUowed into cavities, which, by their union with the ethmoid bone, complete the ethmoidalcells ; and, crossing these edges transversely, are two small grooves, sometimes canals, which open into the orbit by the anterior andposterior ethmoidal foramina. At the anterior temiination of theseedges are the irregular openings which lead into the frontal sinuses; PRONTAL BONE. 27 and between the two internal angular processes, is a rough excavationwhich receives the nasal bones, and a projecting process, the nasalspine. Upon each orbital plate, immediately beneath the externalangular process, is a shallow depression which lodges the lachrymal Fig. 15.*. gland; and beneath the internal angular process a small pit, sometimesa tubercle, to which the cartilaginous pulley of the superior obliquemuscle is attached. Internal Surface.—Along the middle line of this surface is agrooved ridge, the edges of the ridge giving attachment to the falxcerebri and the groove lodging the superior longitudinal sinus. At thecommencement of the ridge is an opening, sometimes completed bythe ethmoid bone, i\[.e foramen ccecum. This opening lodges a processof the dura mater, and occasionally gives passage to a small vein whichcommunicates with the nasal veins. On each side of the vertical ridgeare some slight depressions which lodge the glandulse Pacchioni, andon the orbital plates a number of irregular pits called digital fossce, which correspond with the convolutions of the anterior lobes of the * The external surface of the frontal bone. 1.
