Edward Walter Maunder (1851-1928), British astronomer. Maunder, who worked at the Royal Observatory in London, is best-known for his work on sunspots and the solar cycle. A period from 1645 to 1715 when the number of sunspots was very low, is called the Maunder Minimum in his honour. This minimum coincided with a period of low temperatures known as the Little Ice Age. Maunder was one of the founders of the British Astronomical Association in 1890, and was the first editor of its journal. This photograph is from the Bain News Service.
