The masterpieces of the Centennial international exhibition of 1876 .. . Lace Curtain : Mauon bUuu. Fam. INDUSTRIAL ART. 415 specimens of antique art. that could be bought at prices quite within the meansof any one possessed of a lawn worth adorning in this way. On page 411, we have an engraving of a Bronze Candelabrum selectedfrom the French Collective Exhibit, which is as excellent in its way as theBronze Chandelier, manufactured by Messrs. Hart & Son, of London, shownon page 412. We speak of these two works together, because they give anexcellent illustration, each in itself, of a proper consideration of use beforeornament, and the adopting of the latter to that end. The Candelabrum, intendedas a support for five candles in sockets set widely apart, has a short, strong. Glass and Silver Ccntrc-piccc: Elkiiigton ^ Co, stem resting upon a broad and firm base. Tlie idea of strength, solidity andweight is conveyed by the couchant lions and the square pillar. On the otherhand, the Chandelier, as something suspended from the ceiling, must be as lightand graceful as possible. Observe how artistically this idea has been preservedin its construction. The central shaft, or tube, is no longer than is necessaryto convey the requisite amount of gas to the four burners. These latter arearranged about a circle of brass, ornamented with leaves and tendrils. Evensuch delicate enrichments as those are used sparingly, to avoid any appearanceof overloading and weight, and, in order to give an appearance of greatersecurity four chains, suspended from the rosette at the ceiling, are fastenedto this band. 4i6 THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1876. The Carpet illustrated on page 413 was displayed by the manufacturers,Templeton & Co., OF Glasgow, in their extensive exhibit
