When a storm destroyed the bridge Xerxes of Persia had built across the Hellespont, he ordered his men to whip its waters.


Xerxes, the son of Darius I, ruled Persia from 485 to 465 He began preparations to invade Greece in 483. He had his men build a bridge across the Hellespont, a narrow strait separating Asia and Europe. When a storm destroyed it, he ordered his men to whip its waters 300 times (shown in this 1905 drawing) and to throw chains into the waters.
