He joined the Glasgow Highlanders () in September 1914 as a private, and,feeling he could do most good in the ranks, re-fused promotion. He saw much active servicein France at Bethune, La Bassee, and HighWood and was reported missing in the ad-vance on 15 July 1916. He was last seen assist-ing a wounded man in No Mans Land, and waslater reported as presumed died on that date ..
