White willow tree (Salix alba) trunk much damaged by Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber), Narew marshes, Poland, April
Beavers have become common again in the Biebza and Narew marshes of Poland, Europe's wildest and least constrained wetland, after declining for centuries due to hunting. Beavers help to maintain the marshes as open wetland habitats, felling encroaching trees and bushes and damming drainage channels.
