The Lower Harbor Ore Dock in the waters of Lake Superior provides a stark contrast to the dwarfed Marquette Yacht Club in this autumn scene. The Duluth, South Short and Atlantic Railway completed construction of the dock in 1932. This dock was constructed of steel and concrete measuring over 85-feet tall and nearly 1,000-feet long (969 feet), with 150 pockets. The total capacity was 47,500 tons. The & A. Railway merged with other companies to form the Soo Line and eventually the Wisconsin Central Railroad. The dock remained in operation until the late 1960s when a decreased demand for iron ore forced it to close. When in operation, railroad trains would access the dock from the top and empty loads into the pockets or chutes with gravity delivering the ore to the holds of waiting ore ships. The railroad tracks connecting to the dock were dismantled. Only a few ore docks remain in operation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or in Wisconsin.
