Skin. Light micrograph of a section through skin. At top is the epidermis (purple), the outer layer of the skin. The large layer beneath this is the dermis, which contains adipose (fatty) tissue and loose, or areolar, connective tissue. Loose connective tissue consists mainly of collagen and elastin fibres. It holds organs and epithelial membranes in place in the body. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
