Side view of a fishing junk, towing small boats, in the open sea past the Ocean Amusement Park, Aberdeen, Hong Kong, China

The fishing port of Aberdeen is a major attraction to both the local population and tourists. Its catch accounts for over one third of Hong Kong's total catch. Local fishing vessels fish the waters of the adjacent continental shelf in the South and East China Seas. Trawling is the most important fishing method, but long lining, gill-netting, purse-seining, hand lining and cage trapping are also practised. The self-financing and non-profit making Fish Marketing Organization provides marketing services. This photograph was taken at the end of the Fishing Moratorium in June and July. Pot plants and clothes hung out to dry are visible around the living quarters at the stern. It is thought the fisherpeople of Aberdeen, called the Tanka, emerged from a persecuted group of original inhabitants, who were pushed off the land, moving onto the sea to live in boats, by Cantonese-speaking newcomers in the 15th and 16th centuries. Fish and seafood are important in Cantonese cuisine. The Ocean Amusement Park, founded in 1977, has 35 rides and other attractions such as aquariums. It covers 870,000 square metres and attracted million visitors in 2007-08. In the picture we see the Ocean Park Escalator (at 225m, the second longest outdoor escalator in the world) and other rides.
