The dry spring of 2004 resulted in tinder dry heather and peat on the fells of the lake district. Fires start accidentally from discarded glass focussing the sun on dry vegetation, or a carelessley discarded ciggarette butt, fetch water from the nearby lake (derwent in this case and bomb the fire line to dampen the vegatation and control the spread. Each tote under the helicopter holds approx 1tonne of fire burned for about a week.
